What Cold Air Intake?

I'm new to R-F and I have a bone stock 98 Ranger 4x4 Extended Cab Pickup. She has the 4.0L OHV backed by an Auto tranny. I want to start with some mods and I figured a CAI would be a good starting point. I was shopping around and the cheapest kits are about $250! WTF!?! I suppose I could make my own but I don't want it to be a mocked up, ghetto rigged intake. Am I better off just going with a K&N Drop In Filter or going all out and getting a complete CAI? What kit do you have? Where did you get it? Do you like it? Have you seen increase MPG, Power?

I have the K/N also it is a good intake as intakes go. I don't think it alone does anything except in the higher rpm ranges K/N even documents this with the kit showing a dyno-run and I think it was 5 or 6 hp and 12 ft lbs of torque. All of it above 4000 RPM.
A good non restrictive 2 1/2" cat-back exhaust will give you more bang for your buck and some improvement in gas mileage. I am still undecided about a set of headers the Stock ones seem ok for combustion chamber size, and I wonder if the 1 1/2" primaries will help with low end torque.
I would like to see some honest dyno charts to see where the gains are and what the cost per hp is with the headers and intake. I think some computer re-programing like the x-caliber or livewire programmers would be better bang for your buck or make the other changes perform better.

Just installed the K&N the other day, didn't take long to install and I noticed some improvment.

is it true that when you get a full cold air intake system, that you need to have your computer reprogrammed in order to take full advantage of the CAI. I thought it was a bolt on and go kinda upgrade, but then again I'm just the re-re with the stock intake...or so one of my fellow Marines puts it.

I was told to just disconnect the battery for like 15 minutes and it will adjust for the amount of air flow, but that could be bs
