SOHC To OHV questions
My 00 SOHC has the rattle going on and its a descent powered motor but my other truck has the OHV and have had them before and they prove to be more reliable and like the setup better overall. Thought about trying to find a 98+ Ranger or Explorer with the OHV I know the bolt patterns are the same that connect to the tranny so I know I can use my current 5R55E and thought the motor mounts were identical but as far as anything else goes with wiring or anything else what else is going to need done? Thanks.

Well actually lol I just got finished putting in an sohc into my 98 ranger. It had the OHV but that motor has its flaws as well. 1. Being that in the heads dont have good oil circulation and the valve train suffers from it a bit. and 2. The rear main seals start to leak rather early, and gradually start to leak alot of oil. but other than that they are very good reliable low down torqy motors. I dont know if you are looking to get one or not but I do know a bit about the swap.

Is there much to change electronic wise? The only motor swap I ever really looked into was the V8 but just going to stick with the 6cyl for awhile. Will changing the computers interfere with anything in the the truck that will require having the computer reflashed? I hear stories and never know what to believe and what not to believe. Are you selling your Ohv?

Yes I am selling it and for some reason my computer isnt accepting friend requests but no the wiring for it is basically the same although you might have to change some smaller electronic parts, ie the gem and some stuff like that. It is a pretty easy swap same mounts and everything. Although if you do this swap you will lose the pats system.

unless you got an 00 ohv from a ranger, but the ohv is more reliable. you couyld keep the pats system by getting a newer computer for the ohv from a newer ranger. its all just in how you want your vehicle equipped thats all. i also have a 5spd with it if your interested in an swapping that to. All of them are in good shape, and here is the thread with the swap I did I hope it helps you out and if you cant find your answers there just ask me. https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...4-0l-sohc.html

Have you thought about just putting in a low mile used newer 4.0? I got a 1,000 mile '06 4.0 for $1500 and swapped it in my 01 ranger to fix the timing chain issue and the 110k of abuse behind the wheel of a lead foot teenager. 03/04 is when ford supposedly fixed the timing chain issues. Though the tensioners and guides still do wear, but don't wear out as fast as the older motors.
Most of all these newer late model engines from a JY comes iwth complete engine/trans harnesses. You can utilize your existing harness and carry over the new engines pigtails(injectors, dpfe, etc). Plus, you'll be upgrading that poor intake design found on 97-00 expos.
Just my thoughts. Take 'em or leave 'em.
Assuming so considering his screen name is Exploder and the SOHC was found in 97+ expos before it made the appearance in the Ranger...
