PCV Elbow - Fix for a very common CEL!

Ordered up a 16mm 5/8" 4"x4" right angle silicone elbow through Racer Parts Wholesale:

Silicone Hose - SPA Technique 90 Degree Silicone Hose Elbow

To fix this very common problem related to the PCV Valve Assembly:

Size: 199.3 KB

The issue with this elbow is - you can't buy JUST the elbow, Ford only sells strictly the entire assembly, which runs close to $40 - RockAuto only sells the entire assembly as well. Switching to a rather aftermarket approach with the silicone elbow - it is guaranteed to last the life of the vehicle, and you have no worries of any heat getting to so soft and pliable that it will crack - as does the origional ford rubber elbow.

The radiator hose runs and rests right against it, putting constant downforce - combine that with the heat of the radiator, plus the engine right next to it - and it causes the rubber to soften up and crack. The replacement to this through ford will just have the same problem again a few years down the road.. might as well do it right the first time eh?

Compared:

To hook it up, all you have to do is take a razor knife and cut an inch off of the engine side of the mount... then slip it all together, and tighten it down:

Size: 189.6 KB

This fixes issues related all over the engine throwing bad codes, the symptom that is very noticeable is a high idle (2000-2500) which will last a few seconds before it drops back to where it should be, along with the engine running fairly rough.

Fixed the issue once and for all! And it looks good to - a nice splotch of performance blue under a hood is always a good thing! :-D

Props go to IN2 FX4 for coming up with the original fix idea - PMed him a bit to find info on it - these elbows are actuall yhard to find, and most stores usually don't have this size in stock - took about 3 weeks from order time, to delivery, for it to get to my place.

Nice work man. I'd probably order some black hose but that's just me.

Very nice. Someone should put this in the "How to" section.

hmm..I got 2 perfect elbows here...no wait...I got 4. 2 on the truck and 2 not. The one on the back of the driverside valve cover is the same as the one above the thermostat.

I didn't use the hose clamps on mine when I did it. The original hose didn't have them and it is just a light vacuum, plus the silicone hose has a nice snug fit and is reinforced. Mine has been working well that way for over a year but the hose clamps are probably good extra security.

I don't think that size silicone elbow comes in black. At least they did not when I was looking.

Actually ford sells a replacement for it and it cost me $17 after tax. Check jeweler54's how to, it has the part number. Good fix either way.

Yeah, it was an extra snug fit for sure.. I used the clamps only because I didnt want to risk anythign happening to it :-)

And in terms of colors - only racing colors are available with 90% of silicone aftermarket parts nowadays.. Red, Blue and Yellow are the main ones available.

The idea about this fix is to have a permanent fix. The Ford part is destined to fail again in a few years. I plan on keeping my truck for a long time and don't want to do this repair again. If you don't need a long term repair, use the Ford part.

BTW, I could not find the part for $17. I was quoted over $35 at the dealer and buying online was not much less when shipping was included.

Not sure what your dealership told you but you can buy just that elbow from Ford, I have my reciept right here for it and they had 17 of them in stock when I ordered it.

Well, where I went they were onyl abel to order the entire part up so chances are they might have been jipping me - BUT - on the flip side, this tube will last the lifetime of my truck, and Ill never have to worry about it cracking or sucking itself down.. Best to buy the proper tool to fix the job then going back and buying the part that will always fail down the road

I had the same problem when I went to the Ford dealer for a replacement part. The only thing that was available was the entire PVC tube assembly. That is the hard long plastic tube with an elbow on each end. I told them I found that hard to believe. They checked into it further and found just the elbow for another engine but no part number existed for just the elbow for the 4.0 SOHC. That is when I decided to look elsewhere.

Maybe some dealers are better at looking up part numbers. That still doesn't change the fact that it is made with a rubber material that is not capable of standing up to that environment long term.

Can I get a zoomed out pic?

My tube appears to be too short between the intake and valve cover. I can't really see any cracks in the elbow. I was told by the dealership it was the PCV tube. So I'm not sure what to look for exactly.

EDIT: yup I was definitely looking at the wrong elbow. Most likely I'll do this fix just so I don't have to worry about it.

Its a good thing to do, whether its a "brand new" tube from ford that will fail in a year, or just order up one of the silicone ones - I find that the way using the silicone is best.. as this part fails all the time on rangers :-(

I ordered the silicone one.

I plan on keeping my Ranger for a long time, so a permanent fix is much more sensible.

I recomend buying the ford part its not that expensive and it has been changed so that it is plastic on the bend were the crack happens up to the point where it connects to the bottom of the intake

Nice Job ..... I've been looking all over for a similar aftermarket fix, but it was a no-go. NOBODY carries silicone elbows in that diameter up here. I just put in my order and now await with bated breath.

Go to racerpartswholesale.com thats where wowmike2001 and I went. They sell the exact one.

The part was only $1 more than the Ford replacement.
