Programmers

So as far as programmers go - i know most, if not all, of the members on here would recommend that i go with an x cal 2 or the x cal 3 right? well i probably would but.... i am getting a superchips cortex programmer only because i have a connection and am getting it for a steal.

My question is, has anyone used one or had experience with a superchips in their ranger? If so, how did you like it?

In some of the other car realms I'm apart of the superchips tunes are more mild on timing & tranny shifts than I prefer.

No matter the brand of flash device.. the tune is only as good as the person who wrote it.

well... if i could find an x cal programmer for the same price im paying for this one then i would definitely go with that. I know cost was probably not the best deciding factor but i wasnt gonna get one at all so as long as its better than i have i'll be alright.

It really depends on the tuner that writes your tunes **and** the octane he's accounted for.

The real gain on a ranger 4.0L is TQ (power) at lower rpms. Peak power.. I'm not sure.

do you have an average or even a guess on how much gain? like this superchips i have is supposed to give me 13.8Hp and 19.6ft/lb of torque. i dunno what im actually getting but all i know is it a hell of a lot more than i had. this thing made a huge difference.

I raced a Jeep Cherokee 4.0 manual, which before would have kicked my ***. well this time i kicked his. we were tied in first gear but when i went to second i just took off.

No I've not had the ranger on a dyno. I'll tell you this though. I agree with there being a HUGE DIFFERENCE. The stock timing curve is very conservative even for 87 octane.

And on 93shell I've got the curves (charts actually) tweaked based on knock sensor activity. Lets just say that in a few areas.. my timing for 93 octane is doubled. The increase in part throttle power is amazing. This ranger runs much stronger than a lot of the V8 1970s cars I grew up with.

btw, don't get caught up in power numbers. Making peak numbers on a dyno only get you into the ball park. And more importantly you don't spend much time at all at WOT and at those rpms. Daily drivers spend 99% of the time at lower rpms and part throttle. IMO thats far more important for the tune to make power and for the auto tranny to have just the right shift feel and TQ convertor lock up points.

everyone on here says the x cal tuners are better so i just wondered how they actually compare.

but thanks for the info.
