I can say that once I swapped in a return system with adjustable regulator and set to 42psi, things were much better.

Maybe had to do with the fact that my engine was a 1997 and converted to run with 1999 electronics?
That might be your problem right there... the 97 explorer has the return system running at 35-45 psi. where as the 99 explorer is a returnless setup running at 56-72 psi. Maybe you had too much pressure coming from your rangers regulator?

I may try and mess with mine a little, I dont feel mine is running at its best. I also need two new performance cats to replace the crap stock ones I have that seem like they are toast now. and I may have some 02 sensor probs, that could be a result of me running rich for a while too, so idk

Did you get 716057 to convert the output shaft from AOD to 4R70W?

do you mean this part?

http://advanceadapters.com/product/2...onversion.html

If so then NO, this wasnt mentioned anywhere when i was researching.... Whats this do?? I already have the new output shaft that comes with the adapter but whats this part do, its hard to tell what it is in the picture. Obviously its a conversion part but there isnt much info on this... But thanks for letting me know. I would have been putting this together and would have been pissed not to have this part.

You need the sleeve, pin and snap ring in 716057 because the oiling system is different in the AODE/4R70W as compared to the earlier AOD.

I can sympathize with that for sure, sounds like you've planned this swap pretty thoroughly. Let's see some pics of the progress asap

Well i was searching on craigslist for some parts out of an explorer/mountaineer and i came across this. If the price is right, im going to try and buy it out right. It would be easier and plus id have all parts needed for the swap.. If this falls through, ill continue getting the parts from that other guy.

Now Parting Mountaineer

what cams should i put in this 5.0 motor? Im pretty much going to leave motor stock but this is part I'd like to upgrade. Im going to limit myself to cams and headers... Im limited on options with headers already so ill leave that alone lol. Lets hear some options out there for this motor please :)

Cam is a good choice imo. I always have heard that's one of the main drawbacks of the explorer 302. If you want to run a Ford cam you could go with the old stand by of an E303, but personally, I would run a B303. Good low end torque and power up to 6000 RPM.

Also my 5.0 Dyno book really likes the Comp Cams 224/232 Cam. Has a good peak power, but great increases all the way through the power band, not just at high RPM's.

Or... you could just swap on some 1.72:1 Cobra Roller rockers. I plan on doing this to my engine if I can ever find a set for a decent price. It'll be like adding a bigger cam, but will cost less, be easier to actually do, and will be another upgrade all together because it will be reducing friction. I like the idea of a cam swap, but just keep in mind that you don't need to go too big. You will suffer with the auto and stock stall converter if its too large b/c you will have no bottom end to get you rolling. Not to mention that with the OBD2 system you might have tuning issues and/or trouble codes, but Im not sure about that.

Well i wanted a mild cam... something better than whats in it now. Not looking to race the truck by all means but some simple bolt on that will give me a little more go and still keep me within spec of the emissions aspect of things :) any suggestions?

If you looking to stay on the mild side run an E303. You can probably find a used one pretty easily, if not they usually sell for just under 200 dollars. I think the cam would do the best job of waking up your 302. I have tried both a cam and 1.7 roller rockers, although currently i'm running both.

hah I blew mine too.. how the hell did you blow yours?? The only reason mine died was because I had a massive coolant leak in the winter I didnt see because of a huge snowstorm that covered it up in the driveway. I got maybe a mile and it was toast. It was bullet proof besides that

Drivin home from new mexico today and went up this massive hill and in order to keep up with the flow of traffic going up hill, i have to floor the gas thus making my rpms jump close to 5k+. do that over and over again at 100+ degree type temps, things get hot and things start to break lol... lame... 3.0 doesnt have the power to carry these tires and double lift. Plus i had a cylinder 5 misfire every once in a while. im sure that was a cause too. oh well, on to something bigger and better now!

Mannnn im sooo tempted to buy those headers but i dont want to waste any money yet just in case i run in to a few speed bumps a long the way... I dont understand how it takes ppl 3 weeks to do a swap? Ive done motor swaps on cars before in a weekend. Why is this any different lol There is a few explorers/mountaineers in the junk yard around town so i should be squared away if i need anything partswise!
