How much tranny fluid for an 05 4.0 Automatic??

Ok, so my owners manual says 10 quarts of Dextron 5???!!! THats a lot! My chiltons says 3 quarts, which sounds like too little. Any help guys? plus is there any problem with having too much tranny fluid, like another quart? thanks a lot!!!

Its mercon V.

If your doing a filter change your going to get about 3-4 quarts out.

If your installing a shift, dropping the valve body will net you another 4 quarts.

The last two or so quarts is in the torque converter.

So an empty transmission will hold 10. whatever quarts the manual says.

I would recommend a flush over the just a filter change, granted its like 3 times the price. It worth it to me.

the best way is to flush the tranny then change the filter b/c when u flush you flush all the gung through the filter the flush keeps the filter looking ok but i would recommend flush then filter change but id wait till like 60,000 miles till you do both or what your owners manual recommends.

change the filter afterwards......that is what my repair manual says to do if you flush.....it says that way all the crap and scrap metal that was in the tranny doesn't go into the tranny.......the filter is on the pickup side of the fluid, the fluid returning to the pan doesn't go through the filter...

the transmission guy that i go to said that a flush on a 5r55e tranny could cause the soleinoids to get damaged. he recommends dropping the pan, changing the filter and putting in new fluid.....he said there is only 2-3 quarts in the torque converter (there are about 13 quarts in the whole tranny)......

i wonder if when the pan is off if it would hurt the tranny to start the truck and cycle through the gears with the pan off to help get out some of the fluid?

thats what I was thinking, but I dont want to damage the tranny. I already changed the filter and the fluid but they gav me a rubber gasket and the instructions said to use a little grease to hold the gasket to the pan. I dabbed a few trouble spots and it is leaking from those areas!! so now it comes off to get cleaned and I will install it dry since no one near me has a cork gasket.

my dealership only charges 119 for the flush and thats with all the fluids and a filter. a fluid change i would do myself, but hell, if it costs about the same to get them to do it, why not right? lol. that and i dont know how to technically do a flush.
