4 wheel drive

I have a buddy of mine with a 1992 ranger 4.0 v6 stock axles and such, but for some reason the truck will not engage into 4 low most of the time if at all, and sometimes will not engae into 4 high sometimes. any thoughts? i was on here and found one way to check the hubs cause with the miles on it it's a possibility, but beyond that no clue.
