For Rangers the ONLY 31 spline 8.8" axles came in the 2002 FX4 Off-Road and 03+ FX4 Level II Off-Road trucks. No other Ranger has ever gotten a 31 spline axle from the factory.

can you turn a 28 spline into a 31 spline?

or my real question is can you use the 28 spline axel housin and replace all the guts?

There is a 28 spline 8.8 also, but the axle tubes are different diameter between the 31 and 28 spline axles.

WTF?

you can have aftermarket 31 spline axles made for the 28 spline tube....you will have to swap out the diff to a 31 spline diff....

^^^ I don't think you can actually... The spline count is sort of a measure of diameter of the axle shaft... The splines are always the same tooth size, frequency, so if you add more splines, you have to increase the overall diameter. You can't fit a seal and bearings for a 31 spline axle shaft into a 28 spline houseing. I just don't think it will work. At least not for the 8.8 axle.

hummmmmm i know on the 9" axles you can go up in spline count with no problem.....i just thought it would be the same for the 8.8....

If that were true then there would be no difference in axle tube diameters between the 31 spline and the 28 spline axles.

Having aftermarket axle shafts fabb'd is quite an extreme though, I'm assuming he was asking about a JYswap.

I knew about the 28 spline 8.8, but I'm also fairly certain he is not looking to downgrade his equipment if he already has the 8.8

according to Moser Engineering ( www.moserengineering.com ) (I just got off the phone with them) it IS possible to go from a 28 spline axle to a 31 spline axle without swapping out the housing.......they said the 31 spline and the 28 spline axles are the same size in diameter and the only thing besides the axles to replace is the diff...........they said it is a common swap in Mustangs to go from 28 spline to 31 spline without a housing change.......
