I'm just curious, what kind of mods to your rear axle would have to be done to attain the rear steering on say...a Ford 10.5" Rearend?

Does it pose any threats to normal everyday driving?

Is there a way to "turn it off" for normal daily driving?

A whole lot of time and money. you might be better of making a gm quad steer fit under it. Or a custom built front axle to make it work.

 

older preludes had a rear steet setup. not sure how indepth it was though.

see if you can find anything on the newer GMC's, some come with rear steer now.

I'm just kinda curious on how someone would modify their rear axle for rear steering.

Lot's of cars have had rear steering, but it's only like 1.5* max. Not much.

 

It generally has to be an axle that comes in a steering axle. EX: D60, D44. Those you would have to cut the end of the tube off and press then weld the inner C on at the correct caster, bolt up the knuckles/hub/brakes etc. Then you would have to run full hydraulic steering, but if you want to drive it on the road you would have to run a manual steering lock-out so incase a line blows or something your rear-end doesn't start floppin back and forth and cause a wreck.

 

GM trucks do not have rear steering, it is "quadra-steer". All it does is complement the front steering to improve the turning radius at low speeds and to help with lane changing at freeway speeds. It cannot be operated seperately or independantly from the front wheels.

 

So it would be a very complicated process and should be done by a pro...

Would be kick *** though.
