which parking light wire is 'hot'?

 

Tap the marker light like this:

30 - Constant FUSED 12V+
85 - Good ground
86 - Tap marker light power source wire
87 - Run to power of fog lights

Ground the other wire of the fogs.

Make sure to use 12ga wiring from the relay to the fogs and I'd say 14g for the rest of the system.

 

1. I'm trying to figure out which marker wire to tap.
2. I thought 86 goes to ground. Are 85 and 86 interchangeable? As long as one is + and the other is negative?
3. The Ford pigtails I got (part# WPT-107) use 14 gauge wire. Do I still need to splice with thicker wire?

 

The brown wire is hot with the exterior running lights on.

Coil polarity matters on some relays but not on others, depending on whether there is a spike suppression diode present or not. To be on the safe side with Bosch type automotive relays, I always use 86 for hot and 85 for ground.

The 14ga pigtail wires should be fine for your stock foglamps. Ford got by with 18ga to the fogs in 2001.

Now there's a different way of doing it......

Why not just do the fog light / high beam mod instead?

And if you want to have the fogs on with the parking lights, turn the parking lights on, then hit the fog light button "on". No wiring needed.

I just don't understand why you did it the way you did.

 

His truck didn't come stock with fog lights. He had to wire them like I did.

 

I just seen his super small print sig. So he did the 01-03 front end swap. Gottacha!! At first glance at his avatar and not noticing his super small print sig, I thought he had an 01-03 Ranger.

 

yep and my truk doesn't have any prewiring for fogs, inside or out. 99.999999% of fogless Rangers do but mine didn't. And I didn't want to deal with running **** through the firewall. Wiring em like this automatically enables them to stay on when the highbeams are on
