Lunch break: Ranger Extracts Full Size Chevy

I've been a bit busy to post much but I had an interesting experience yesterday.

I went to lunch with a former co-worker (well, we both still work here, but I'm in the offices now) and as we were leaving a guy comes up to my truck and asks if I can help him get his truck out of the mud.

I say "sure" and he climbs in the bed and we head out.

He said he was behind the small shopping center where the restaurant is. About 1/2 mile behind it is a trail along the woods which leads to the right-of-way for some big power lines. It's downhill and moderately steep going down to the right-of-way.

Turns out he was taking his mid-90's CK extended cab pickup down to do some offroading. He just got this 4x4 and wanted to try it out apparently. It had worn AT style tires on it.

This right-of-way was like thick, gooey mud of the kind that sticks to everything in clumps. My truck is well clumped at the moment, lol. I wouldn't even have ventured down there in 2WD without the mud tires and winch BOTH.

I got down in position to pull him out, but it was hard to maneuver the truck around it was so slick and deep. No water, just mud so it was unlike Wharton.

He was at right angles to the exit trail so the first order of business was to get him out of the suction -- he was in to the frame rails -- and turn him a bit. Managed that no problem using the winch but didn't even need the ****** block.

Then I tried to drive back up the hill to get in position to pull him up it...uhh-uhh...not going to make it.

So I winched myself up the hill first, turned the truck around where it was drier, then pulled him up the hill.

Total time to do the extraction: 35 minutes. Not bad.

When I was first trying to climb the hill, he yelled, "Whoa, hold on a minute. You're not in 4 wheel drive. Your front wheels aren't spinning!"

I told him, "My truck is only two wheel drive." His jaw literally fell open. Then a look of doubt came into his eyes and he was obviously thinking, "Oh man, I'm still not getting out of here."

Ha ha! I was happy to prove him wrong. I think with four wheel drive and my tires I COULD have climbed that hill - but even the locker wasn't getting me up it in 2WD.

I didn't trudge over to his truck or do the hookups to the trees or anything, but I did have to get out a couple of times and my shoes and pants cuffs were a mess. It gave me some openings to tell the story at the offices when I got back, lol. People were like, "Where have you BEEN?"

I never put my flooded knee boots back into the cab after my "swim" last week, lol -- that would have been the SENSIBLE thing to do, you're right Neil!

Nah. No sales. I'm just too much a techie for that. At least at this point, lol.

Nice work John. If you ever see him again, you can tell him he can get stuck even further down the trail once you have the SAS.

The one you and I went to is in Tri-State mall. This was behind the next center up Naamans road where the Home Depot is, just on the other side of 95.

I told him about the SAS and he nodded and said, "Oh, so I just caught you in transition then?" and I said yes. I didn't tell him the truck has been "in transition" for 4 years now...

Haha great story John! I had a little extraction story of my own yesterday, but it was a guy with a burnt-out water pump and I was taking my date home, lol. Just hooked him up and drug him down the way to Firestone. Your story sure is better than mine!

Keep a cheap disposable camera in your truck for such picture emergencies for us folks here at R-F! :) Good for insurance too.

Awesome story, way to make us 2wd's look good!

Man its like any where I go this will not leave me alone. Maybe I need to take some time off from the forum.

This guy must feel real good about himself having been pulled out by a two wheel drive.

Very nice of you. Sounds like you work for a pretty decent place too, not giving you problems coming back from lunch late.

It's ashame you didn't have a camera with you, it'd be nice to see some pics. In my daily driver I have a cheap 2MP camera I just leave the batteries out of so they don't die. It comes in handy from time to time for accidents and such.

I love the part when he finds out you're just 2 wheel.

Just give it some time Bryan. After the next trip, it will all be forgotten about for the most part because something will happen to someone else and your partial submersion will be old news.
