About to purchase a ranger, advice/some questions.
Whats up guys, first post here. I've been lookin about the forums for a while and I like what I see so I'll stick around Im also a member on ls1tech and ar15.com
Well I need a four wheel drive for a winter vehicle and I've had a soft spot for rangers, great little trucks. I used to use them as work trucks and never had any problems.
but a few questions on going to look and shop around, what are the common problems with rangers I should look for?
How many miles are to many for a 4.0 liter and the auto tranny, what is a realistic cut off point.
Im looking at a 98XLT supercab 4D 4x4 4.0 liter auto with 131k/ CD AC regular windows and locks. Price is 5200. Is the mileage to high and should I stay away from it. Or if I check it out and its in good working order how much should I offer the guy.
Can you update the front styling from say a 98XLT to a 02XLT with minimal work?

Welcome and looks like you are on the right track.
The truck seems a little high in price. Its good that it has the 4.0 but, the auto trannys are known for not being the best, we call the awfulmatics. The mileage seems high for the price but I could be wrong. As long as the truck as been maintained well the engine should hold up well, along with the other parts.

price is iffy, but it is possible to find a newer Ranger for around that, mine is an 02 FX4 and I picked it up for $8500. I have high mileage- 152,000 miles, and I have the auto. shifts rough from time to time, but it pulls like mad. The 98 has the old pushrod motor in it, nice for lower end torque, but the SOHC has about 30 more hp out of it. I go wheeling with guys who have the pushrod and they all covet my SOHC and wish they had it.
