door jamb switch

You will have to remove the door panel. As to removing the window crank, I can't remember off the top of my head if you need a special tool or not. Once removed you will need to remove the weather proof insulation. The switch is behind the door latch if I remember right.
OR...
80% of door jamb switch related problems on a ranger are cured by spraying WD-40 into the latch/door jamb area. The dome light on my '96 wouldn't go off and the door adjar light stayed on. A quick squirt of penetrating oil fixed it instantly.

THis should help:
Also the door handle (if manual is a torx bit).
Make sure you have the right switch, ford made 4 variations: pass or driver and power door locks or manual. It all depends on the placement of the metal tap on the top. Not the button but the little tab sticking out, so when it locks in place the orientation of the electrical connection is different.
The best thing would be to remove the whole door latch (actually just loosen it) by removing the three torx screws in the door jam area.
That way you can view it easier.

I just fixed my door ajar light on my 02 fx4. Same switch as my previous ranger was giving me grief.
Drivers rear door bottom switch.
I was going to disconnect the switch and not bother with the latch. But I pulled the latch out. Cleaned it all up and now the latch closes nice and secure.
With you back door closed and the front open....Pull on the bottom of your back door. Is it loose? If yes.. than this is probably the switch throwing the lights on. This is a COMMON issue. Slamming the door may work for a bit, but after a while it will stop working, and you will ruin the latch. Fix it, OR if it can't be fixed, disconnect the wiring to the switch so the DOOR AJAR light wont come on and **** you off.
