Headlights not working??? Help!!!

I have an 01 Ranger XLT. Today I went to turn on my HL's and nothing! Fogs and parking are fine, come on with switch. I have an 8000K HID kit installed, they've worked fine. But arn't coming on. I'm thinking it may be the main HL fuse, I don't have a manual for my truck so can you guys help me out with where and which fuse I need to check. I'm really hoping it is the fuse since neither side lights up.

Thanks for the help!!!!

For 2001, each stock low beam has an individual fuse (#38 & #42, distribution box) and both high beams are on a common fuse (#33, dash box).

The main 30A fuse upstream of the headlight switch that feeds both highs and both lows is #24 in the distribution box.

Bob,what if the headlights work, but the tail lights don't?It's a 1990 xlt.The brake lights and turning signals all work, but if you pull out the switch for the lights, only the headlights come on.The instrument panel won't light up,either.
Thanks for any insight.Happy Holidays.

I don't have a 90 schematic but I do have an 89 which is likely to be similar. The following is based on the 89 schematic.

First, check fuse 10 because it serves the dash lights and all of the exterior running lamps except the headlamps.

The headlight switch has separate internal contacts for the headlamps and the exterior/dash lamps, so it could possibly be bad. Power goes into the switch from fuse 10 on a tan/white wire. It leaves on a brown wire to the exterior lights and it goes to the dash illumination on a blue/red wire.

It could also be wiring between the switch and the exterior lamps/dash lamps. That seems less likely because the two circuits are on separate wires.

That's great,I'll check that out as soon as I can.
Where can one find schematics like that?Any websites to go to?
In your opinion, which books would be better to have on repairing/maintaining my Ranger,Chilton or Haynes?
I just bought a '90 XLT 4 wd.with a Ranger cap on Craigslist, sight unseen, knowing that it will need a few things...should be fun.I still have to pick up the truck...
Again,thanks for the info.

Most of the aftermarket manuals try to cover too many years and too much material to be effective. The Ford factory shop manuals are very good but they are also very expensive.

For electrical work, the best is a Ford factory EVTM for your year truck. They are about $60 new or $10 used on eBay.

This one is about $20 shipped and it is from a reputable seller that I have used several times. You may be able to find it cheaper if you watch and wait.
