undercoating

Can someone recommend a brand and/or a place to go to buy a fairly inexpensive undercoating material. I have no idea what is the best type. My truck has spent itz whole life in Potter county PA which sees a lot of salt so the frame is getting really bad and I need to do something about it. Thanks for the help.

I have sprayed on about three different types when I was living in New Hampshire. They all wore off after a couple of months. But that was just stuff that I bought at autozone or pep boys. I am sure someone must make a better kind.

The best type never completely dries to a hard finish. It is a flexible coating that resists rock chips. You can get the "rubberized" type in spray cans but the commercially applied product is much better, IMO.

I don't think it will help for very long unless you can completely get rid of the rust that's already there. The undercoating will soon crack and peel with the rust. Then salt water creeps under of the remaining undercoating which holds it against the steel, creating a friendly environment for further corrosion.

In that case Bob how would rustoleum fair. I was gonna hit it all with a wire brush and some sand paper first. Or how about something more like a do it your self bedliner stuff?

There are all sorts of things that are supposed to stop rust but few do in the long run. You could wire brush or blast to get most of the flake off and then apply a conversion coating that's supposed to neutralize the rust. I still don't believe there is a cure but you may be able to put it in remission.

I haven't tried it myself but I know people who swear by this stuff:

You might also look to the salt water marine industry for tough, corrosion inhibiting coatings. They have been fighting this problem longer than the rest of us.

RUST NEVER SLEEPS!

go get that can of stuff pictured in an above post from wal-mart. i coated the inside of my aluminum john boat with it because it had a few pin-hole leaks and shes holding fine with the traffic it gets with five people walking on it and the aluminum flexing in the water. plus, its like 3 bucks a can or less.

I just washed my whole frame/axle/drive shafts and sprayed them with Rustoleum Bare Metal primer, which is supposed to stop rust then covered it with Rustoleum Flat Black Industrial enamel. I dont live where there is road salt, but its help up very very well except where I scraped it off... so that may be an option?

Yeah that doesn't sound bad. I was thinking after the primer that the hammered rustoleum would look real good. I appreciate all the suggestions.
