Got a '98 Ranger "dumped" on me
I've just "inherited" a 1998 Ranger single cab with the 3.0L engine. It's been sitting at my house for about 4 years and the owner just told me "you can have it". I tried starting it, and while it tries to start using starting fluid, it just won't keep running. I'm guessing the fuel has gone bad and maybe the lines are fouled up.
I tried putting fresh fuel in, but after only a gallon or two, it started to overflow, so I assumed it was stored with a full tank. When I tried to pump the fuel out with a Pela, the tube won't go down into the tank far enough to get the hose wet. It goes down about 1.5 feet then stops.
Anyway, I think I'll like it if I ever get it going, but I have no tools or money to get it that far. Any advice on how to get it running cheaply would be appreciated.

sounds like 2 things bad gas and maybe a bad pump
drop the tank pull the pump ( its in the tank ) pull it off the assembly and soak it in some pb blaster for a bit ( bout 2 hours or so ) then you can take the wires for it or just cut some wire for it and hook them up to it and touch it to your battery switching + and _ you should hear a whirl
( oh before you do all that! turn off all radio's and anything that makes noise and turn the key if you don't her a whirling sound then your pump aint working )
p.s to pull the bed your gonna need a 55 torx bit and well if ya dont life in a place where it snows you should have no problem but! if you live in a place where it snows then they might be a bit rusty some PB blaster or maxfilm should fix that for ya

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. The problem I have is that I'm very low on money, and the truck isn't even mine at the moment. The "he can have it" line came from the mother of the owner who's whereabouts is unknown at the moment. I'd have to get a mechanics lien or something for abandoned vehicles to get legal ownership of it. I really don't want to put money into something that isn't even legally mine at the moment. It ran good when it was parked however so I have hopes that it will again once the fuel issue is resolved.
I've never been much with a wrench and I'm getting to the age where I hate to do anything major myself however. Has anyone ever tried just punching a hole in the screen and getting the fuel out that way? Or disconnecting the fuel line and letting the pump do the work?
