putting a svo engine in a ranger?
Ok here's the deal. My 89 2.3 just doesn't have the power I want. My buddy has a 86 svo motor he said he would sell me for 300. No trans and the wiring from the car doesn't look so good do here's my question. What will it take todo the swap? I know the motor mounts bolt up but what about the trans? Can I make my wiring fit? Iv ready many forums turboing the rangers and I just can't find out what I need to know. Iv been back and forth on this subject and I pretty much need to know is it worth it? Any help would be useful. I just need more power. And no v8 swaps for me. And help would be appreciated thanks

When you do the swap, you want the mustang next to your Ranger. What you wanna do is move everything from the Mustang to the Ranger. Computer and all. Its not that big a job, just time consuming. And take your time. The SVO intercooler is going to be a problem. No room for it in the Ranger Engine compartment. You'll need to come up with a conventional intercooler
Transmission, I have the low horse version Merkur Motor in mine (145HP only 8-10PSI boost and NO intercooler), stock trans has worked great, 190,000 mile and no issues. The SVO is 205-225 HP depending on the version you have. Stock trannie may be a bad idea.
One thing I forgot when I originally did mine 14-16 years ago, I forgot to change the fuel pump. Remember, you need a high volume pump.
All the info you need is on the internet, do a lot of searches and a lot of research. For example,I kept my Dual Plug Head, the directions on how to keep the Coil Packs and the ICM were readily available.
Buy the hood scoop also and attach it to the Ranger hood. It looks cool.

Its been many years, but a few things that I remember. Pin 23 was blank in my original harness, but necessary for the turbo motor. Pin 23 is the knock sensor. Pin 44 is the octane adjust input, again not used in the Ranger so no wire there. Pin 45 and 51, blank on the Ranger, needed on the turbo motor. Don't remember what they were for. Pin 57????? There might have been one more pin but I don't remember.
Also Ranger computer has no idea how to handle boost.
And I have the original trans in mine and I behave. Thats why its still around. So no idea about the T5.

89rangerblacked, the stock mazda trans will handle the power as long as you're not in the habit of dumping the clutch at 3000 RPM. no need to complicate the swap by going to a t5... just use a better clutch... as for the wiring, try and get a pinout of the ranger and SVO wire harnesses and repin your harness for the svo ecu, or if you don't wanna go that route, get a merkur harness(it's simpler)... get a high volume fuel pump too... get it running stock before messing around with the output... it'll be easier that way
