1994 ranger 2.3 manul 4x2 kisses power sputters and the other day it was rolling smoke I just replaced the fuel filter and the cab will fill up with a smelly smoke like burnt exausht

Reads like you have a clogged exhaust system, Cat or Muffler has rusted out inside and is blocking exhaust flow out the tail pipe

This lowers power and causes exhaust pressure to build up at the engine so it leaks out

 

It only does it off and on and the exhaust feel like it’s flowing well

 

Then check PCV system, if it has leaks then you will get oily exhaust smells

And of course EGR system, cracked EGR valve pipe leaks exhaust
