Crank no start problem
Crank no start problem
I have a 1998 2.5l automatic ranger. About 18 months ago the truck starred to do the crank no start and no codes were being sent. I put in new spark packs, crank sensor. The timing belt was inspected and in good shape and a complete turn up. The fuel pump is working a delivering the proper pressure. Still had off and on problems until a code was sent, bad computer. A mechanic friend put a pick n pull computer in and it started right up, problem it was for a standard trans so I have 3rd gear and reverse only. Then covid and a hip replacement side lined the project.
In September 2020 we ordered a rebuilt from AutoZone, Ford discontinued the unit. Installed the unit and the truck started instantly and drove like a champ. Two weeks later the crank no start happens again. I install the pick and pull unit and it starts and drives in 3rd gear.I am now on my third rebuilt and almost to the day after installing it {two weeks} same thing happens. Put the old one in and it starts and goes.
Has anyone any ideas on whats happening or can refer me to someone? By the way I've called Ford and the aren't helping. The truck is still in great shape with only 250,000 miles on it. I dont want to junk it over this issue. Any help or advice would be greatly appropriated.

Do 50/50 test when there is a Crank but No Start on any engine
50/50 test
Spray fuel into the engine, gasoline or quick start(ether), remove the air tube from engine's intake, you don't need to put it back on for this test
Try to start engine
If it starts and then dies you have a Fuel delivery issue
If it doesn't fire/start then its a Spark issue
50/50 instant results
Testing spark at the wires is not definitive, testing fuel pressure is also not definitive, 50/50 test is definitive
On the 2.3l and 2.5l Lima engine a no fire/start with 50/50 test can also be timing belt slipped or broke, which can happen ANY TIME, new doesn't matter at all
You can test compression on one cylinder, should be above 150psi if belt is OK
Then you can move on to spark
Look at CEL(check engine light), it should come on with key on, it means computer is booting up
Watch CEL when cranking engine over, it should go OFF, this means computer is seeing Crank sensor's timing pulse so will start spark and then fuel injectors
No timing pulse will mean no spark and no fuel
Fuel pump
Engine should start and then die(50/50 test) if you have a fuel delivery issue
When you first turn on the key you can HEAR the fuel pump in the gas tank run for 2 seconds, it only runs for 2 seconds, you can hear a HUMMMMMM then off
And it runs for 2 seconds EACH TIME you turn key off and then back on, so repeat as much as needed to confirm you hear it or you don't, doesn't hurt anything
