Engine Id
Engine Id
Hello Everyone,
I just picked up a 1998 Ranger for $500 to tinker with. I was told that the engine was swapped out. It came with a 2.5L but I was told someone swapped it out for a 2.3L (not sure of the year). Truck runs rough with no power. OBDII was showing 1 code, PO340 with no CEL on. I replaced the cam sensor and no longer have the error code, however I still have the same issue, rough idle and no power.
My question's are,
1) How can I ID the motor?
2) Will the ECM for a 2.5L work with a 2.3L (if it is a 2.3L)?
Thanks in advance.
Bill

Yes, if its a 1995-1997 2.3l it will work in a 1998-2001 2.5l Ranger, computer is fine with that, they are the same block, head and pistons, only difference is crank shaft and longer connecting rods, 2.5l is a Stroked 2.3l
There may be casting numbers on the block but since 2.3l and 2.5l used the same block..................??
Info on where to look on the block seen here: https://www.stangnet.com/mustang-for...mation.908659/
2.3l/2.5l Lima engines can run on either coil pack so a good way to test spark system is to unhook one coil pack
All spark plugs fire on this dual plug system, no alternating, and this 4cyl engine was used with just a 4 spark plug head for 15 years before the dual plug heads were added in 1989
So it can run fine on 4 spark plugs again, not as much power but fine
Unplug either coil pack, start engine
If there is a steady misfire then you have a bad spark plug or wire on that side of the engine
Repeat with other coil pack
Once you have spark tested you can move on to possible air:fuel problems, i.e. vacuum leaks or injector issues

Thanks for the heads up, was worried about the ECM. I tried cycling the coil packs, just ran worse. Pulled the plugs and wires (what a pain the driver side is), plugs don't look very good, nor do the wires. Going to pick up new ones tomorrow. I did notice that the rear coil pack plug was bent in an upward direction. Looks looks like the connection on the coil pack has broken loose. Going to pick up some new coil packs also. Will know more in a day or so.
Thanks,
Bill
