Need to replace the catalytic converters
I have a 2002 Ford Ranger 2.3 L, and I need to replace the catalytic converters. I have three questions.
1.) My ranger is compliant with federal emissions, but I live in California. Does this mean I need to get a C.A.R.B. compliant catalytic converter even though the original was not?
2.) Any recommendations on aftermarket catalytic converters? I see a lot pop up on Google, but I don't know which are bad. Are either of these decent?

3.) I had someone tell me a new catalytic converter will cause me to fail smog on visual inspection, and that I need to drive it so the cat has some wear on it first. Does anyone know how long that will take?

To me it reads like you need to have it installed by a shop, or someone licensed to install these, and then sign off on it
Yes, no matter what it needs to be a Calif. Certified Cat, should have a sticker on it.
Point your friend was making was that unless you tell them you have a new Cat they won't know, but a visual inspection would SEE the Cat was new, so they would want the documents showing it was correct Cat and installed correctly, at that time.
So if Cat "looked original", i.e. dirty, lol, then they would never ask
But as vehicle gets older and miles get higher "they" will look more closely, because exhaust systems do wear out
