my cel came on during the october snow storm up here in new york.

i bought a code scanner on ebay and it turns out the o2 sensor was bad.

i replaced it and light is now gone.

 

mines got 31in tires (26in stock) and 3.73:1 gears, was getting 22mpg when i bought it, with tires and a K&N cone filter it can do 25mpg on the highway, around town or if I have a heavy foot for a while it does terrible, i don't even want to know how bad it is in those cases

 

the 3.0s just suck for mpg.. just not efficient, my 02 3.0 4x4 is a biotch on gas. but then again idk why ford put a 3.0 in a 4x4 its perty lame. but it does the job i guess just not with gas in mind

 

i wouldnt say it is lame....toyota put 2.4 liter motors in there 4x4's back in the early 90's and 2.7's currently.....

they also had v6's also which got good power and mpg's

 

honestly, how much would it hurt gas mileage and the engine if you shifted at 2500-3000 instead of 2000?


also, i just replaced a bad o2 sensor and now it seems i am getting worse gas mileage. could be due to the cold weather recently also.

 

I've been averaging about 14 mpg with my 98 3.0 driving about 50/50. I just changed my spark plugs so I'm going to see if that helps anything.

98 3.0 Mazda 4x4 Automatic Regular Cab 4.10 LS with 80,000 miles.
Everything is stock except for 15x8 wheels, 32x11.50 at's, 3" body lift, explorer springs, & 98-00 Ranger front end.

I have an efan and new spark plug wires on the way. I'm hoping they will help a little bit.

 

yeah yotas had the 4bangers but they were perty damn efficient. they had some ok torque and good mpg. i just think the vulcan is not a good choice for a V6 in the ranger. just has to work to hard in a 4x4.

 

true that, its still kinda slugish in a stock truck so lift and tires eat up everything its got......

 

I got a 00 2wd 3.0 auto single cab with stock size tires. .. And i filled up in tennesee... went to see my parents in alabama and came back . and i went 425 miles on that tank.. I filled up again and it held 15.6 gallons. I even filled up at the same station as before.. It got like 27.2 mpg.. I was going 55 pretty much the whole way on the highway.. Still dont see how im getting such good milage.. I got dynomax exhaust.. Kn airfilter with the snorkle removed.. Autolight double platinum plugs.. Autolight professional series wires.. 16inch Efan.. Use mobil 1 5w-30... replaced the filter and fluid in the tranny.. Put mobil synthetic fluid in the rearend.. And a bed cover.. Gunna work on getting underdrive pullies next see how good it goes... I guess gas milage just depends on weight and how u take care of ur vehicle not just the engine..

hmm, I've had my truck for 4.5 years now and have never gone below 20MPG....
What are you rear diff's ratio?
Is this a new occurance or has it always sucked?

 

Well, If your asking me it's been this bad since I got the truck in August.

 

i get 19.. and im missing an o2 sensor out by the cat.. since i dont have one.. probably do better once i do

 

Last tank netted me 18.5 MPG with colder winter weather and winter blend gas.

 

if you're driving mostly highway, it could be your gear ratio, 4.10 gearing with stock size tires will get higher fuel economy in the city, whereas the 3.73 gearing is a better balance of both. Also location and how much you have to stop and go also plays a big factor. In NJ doing town driving/highway i get about 20 mpg average, whereas out here in lafayette indiana, i get 16-17, due to all of the stop signs and unsyncronized traffic lights, so i'm doing a whole lot of stop go driving which is lame.

also with the gear ratio, tire size also come into play too.

 

Hmm...Isn't there some tab on the rear diff somewhere that will tell me my gear ratio? If so where would it be?

And....This weekend I think I'm gonna go get stuff to give my truck a complete tune up and also weld the crack in my exhaust. What all do I need to do for a complete tune up?

 

the tag should be held on by one of the diff cover bolts

 

i have 4.10s factory, gotta love a good factory option.. even though i turn 3000 rpms on the highway, i still get good mileage lol..

 

i get 14 with my 4.56's and 32's

 

I'm getting right around 16 with 33x12.50's and my stock 4.10's. I have an automatic ext. cab 3.0. Stock I got right around 17.5 mpg so it's not too much of a loss. This is all driving the same route, mostly city, everyday with about the same temperature. Also I think the K&N CAI and Flow's help alot with fuel economy. I'm going to try out the pullies and e-fan eventually and I think that'll put me over stock even with my tires.

 

Dang dude, that sucks.

i really can't imagine why all you guys get such bad mileage, mine does 25 highway with 31s and 3.73s, its bad in the city but i don't do a ton of stop and go so i haven't checked it there, by the way it got 22 when it had the stock 215s and no mods other than the fiberglas shell
