1987 Ford Ranger 2.9L v6
Hello,
I have a question about my 1987 Ford Ranger. When I try to put gas into my truck, it starts to spit out the gas after 6 gallons and the gauge goes up and down. What would cause the gas to not fill up all the way?
thank you.

Gas tanks have a VENT so you can put in fuel and air can get out
Rangers have used a few different designs, both use the Filler tube
First looks like this: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/WhEAA...H40/s-l500.jpg
The smaller tube lets the air out as the gas goes in, air comes out of gas cap opening
Second looks like this: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/...AC_SL1500_.jpg
Longer smaller tube is where gas flows into the tank, air comes out around the smaller tube in the larger tube and out the gas cap opening
If air can't get out as fast as gas goes in then gas backs up in the filler and shuts off the gas pump
Kinked vent hose or filler hose
Gas gauge issue would be unrelated, could be float/sender issue in the tank or Anti-slosh module in the dash
