2002 3.0 V6 ticking noise when warm, not cold

My 2002 Ranger with a 3.0 (manual) has developed a ticking noise. It’s most noticeable when I’m shifting and at 2k-3k rpm. It doesn’t do it until the engine is at operating temperature and it sounds like it’s coming from the passenger side of the engine. I will attach a video of it. Please give some insight on how to fix this.

Welcome to the forum

Most likely issue would be a failing lifter
A 3.0l Vulcan V6 has 12 hydraulic lifters, these are effected by oil viscosity, colder oil is thicker than warmer oil, so as the oil thins out the lifter is not expanding all the way and a gap is present, which makes the "tick" noise, it could be a partially blocked valve on lifter or a broken spring inside the lifter
Check your oil level first, you do NOT want to over fill the oil
Add a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil
Then run the engine for a few days, see if the noise goes away

Other reasons for "ticking" noise
Ford fuel injectors "tick" and they can get louder over time
Use a hose as a stethoscope to listen to each injector while engine is warmed up and idling

Exhaust manifold leak, these make a "ticking" noise as well, and as exhaust heats up(metal expands) the noise may come and then go when cold
After engine is warmed up and idling have someone put a GLOVED hand over the tail pipe while you listen in the engine bay for changes in noise

Loose spark plug wire, the high voltage can ARC and that makes a "ticking" noise, but I wouldn't think this would change with engine temp
Also check coil pack, these can get cracks, but usually there would also be a misfire

Gotten worse

Marvel didn’t help, I think what I thought was a tick has now developed into some serious knock. I’m hoping my engine can be saved but by the sound of it, it might be an overhaul. Happen to know where I can find a budget 5.0? V8 power might be the next stage for Danger.

A connecting rod knock noise will go away or be greatly reduced if you disable spark on that one cylinder, test for that first

You can use the V8 engine, transmission, wiring and computer from a 1996-2001 V8 Explorer, loads of info out there on this type of swap into a Ranger
And you can buy the whole Explorer fairly cheap now, so get all the parts needed
1996/7 are more desirable but the 1998-2001 work just fine
