2003 Ranger Edge manual tranny fluid.

2003 Ford Ranger Edge with 5 speed manual transmission.

Hey guys, I finally got tired of searching on google and the forum for a one word answer. I'm going to change my transmission fluid what do I have to buy?

It calls for Mercon ATF but seems like they don't make it anymore ...so Mercon V is the answer but apparently it's not compatible. I'm so confused.

Help me out please.

The 03 Ranger manual specifies Mercon for the manual transmission and it also tells you that Mercon is not equivalent to Mercon V and that the two should not be mixed. (It is an especially bad idea to use Mercon in an auto trans that specifies Mercon V).

When Mercon was phased out a few years ago, Ford sent out this service bulletin saying that Mercon V should be substituted for the Mercon that had been previously spec'd for 1985~2007 Ranger manual transmissions:

FORD:
1981-2003 Escort
1984-1995 Thunderbird
1985-2007 Mustang
1985-1996 Bronco
1985-2007 Ranger
1986-1997 Aerostar
1991-2004 Explorer
1995-2007 F-150
1996-2007 F-Super Duty
2001-2003 Explorer Sport Trac, Explorer Sport

LINCOLN:
2001-2002 Lincoln LS

MERCURY:
1984-1995 Cougar
1987-1999 Tracer

ISSUE:

MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON® V as the service fluid for manual transmissions originally requiring MERCON®
.
ACTION:

Beginning immediately all manual transmission applications requiring MERCON® can now be serviced using MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON® / MERCON® V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will continue until remaining inventory has been depleted.
SERVICE PROCEDURE

Service manual transmissions requiring MERCON® with MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON/MERCON® V. For proper fluid application on current and past model manual transmissions refer to the fluid usage chart. (Figure 1)
WARNING:FULL SYNTHETIC MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID (XT-M5-QS), SAE 75W-90 API GL-4 GEAR OIL (XY-75W90-QGL) AND SAE 75W-90 PREMIUM SYNTHETIC TRANSAXLE LUBRICANT (XT-75W90-QGT) ARE UNIQUE FLUIDS AND MUST BE USED IN APPLICATIONS RECOMMENDING THAT PARTICULAR FLUID. Question about manual transmission

What is the best transmission fluid to put in my manual transmission? I don't know much when it come to transmissions. But it does have the 4.0 an I drive it like a trophy truck. If you know what I mean.

Welcome to the forum

1988 to 2011 Rangers used the M5OD-R1 manual transmissions aka M5R1
They use Mercon V automatic transmission fluid, yes ATF in a manual trans

It only holds 2.8quarts bone dry, so after draining it, it usually only takes 2 quarts, maybe a bit less or a bit more

Some like synthetic version, say is shifts smoother, up to you, and no you don't need to drain all the old stuff out to change to synthetic, i.e. flush it out, it mixes with old stuff just fine
