92 pure premium in a 3.0?
92 pure premium in a 3.0?
there is a gas station that sells 92 octane pure premium (no alchohol No ethanol) and i was wondering if using that instead of regular 87 octane would make much of a difference? ive got a 5 speed, 2wd, K&N FIPK II, 40 series duals, 31's with 3.73 gears
look in your owners manual for what octane to run.
i believe my bike was suppose to be run on 89 or higher.
my truck has a custom tune for 89 and 93 octane. but normally 87 will be what it says in the manual.

Get pure fuel when ya' can
You don't really need the 92 octane. Use the lowest octane you can without the engine pinging, avoid the gasahol when you can, having fewer BTU's of energy per gallon than pure gasoline it will hurt your fuel economy and has the very real potential of causing damage to the fuel system and engine over the long run.
If you don't have a tuner, running anything other than 87 is pointless. your truck was built to run on 87 octane so thats the best for it. Motorcycles are different. My old one called for premium only so i ran 93.
It will be better for the engine overall as higher octane burns much better thus leaving less carbon build up. Also, higher octane doesn't allow knocking as lower octane can thus more fuel is consumed to illuminate knocking. However, you won't notice a difference unless the engine is made to run on higher octane. My BMW was designed to run on higher octane, I put 87 in it once...never again.
unless your engine is knocking or pinging, it's useless to switch to anything higher than 87 octane.
higher octane levels create a 'slower' burn which help with knocking or pinging created by advanced ignition timing, etc

yeah it was pinging pretty bad... i sea foamed it last oil change which helped some and it was pretty much completely gone when i was using the premium. ive got 91 in it now an it does seem a little better on hills but not anything to get excited about
Its all about compression ratio. Your motorcycle likely has a compression ratio well over 10:1. You Ranger is 9.3:1 I believe. The higher compression ratio means the fuel will ignite before it is supposed to, so you need a fuel that is more resistant to ignition.
Diesel engine have a very high compression ratio of like 14:1 and the fuel is like 60 something octane. All that means that diesels can run without spark plugs. So by going up a octane level in gasoline engines all you are doing is trying to prevent is from "dieseling".

I'm glad I found something useful in my manual when I was bored the other day that wasn't useless information. The manual actually says not to use higher octane fuel because it can make engine knocks and pings more noticeable...I kid you not. I wouldn't be the type to buy into this theory without seeing it first-hand, but the first few tanks after I bought my truck were premium fuel and it started running much smoother after I switched to regular unleaded.
ive been running 91 octane the last 5 or 6 tanks and the pinging is pretty much gone... Ill try switching back to the regular 87 octane for a few tanks and see what happens. And change that dam timing chain when I get the time.
I also read somewhere that a guy took his truck in (to the stealership) for an oil change and they did a PCM update... free of charge. They were talking about how this is usually the case when you take your car to a dealership for service its just something the dealer does. He had already replaced just about everything to try and fix the pinging, without fixing it, and after the PCM update the pinging was gone... Im going to take mine in to the dealer to have the speedometer reset after i get my 32's so I might as well ask about a PCM update while im there... what do you guys think?
