98 Ranger 3.0 excessively loud steering groan on turns
98 Ranger 3.0 excessively loud steering groan on turns
Happens only when I turn the wheel.
Loud enough for everyone within 300ft away to stare at the truck.
Has 33s on it
170k on the truck and probably the pump
Fluid is full
Sound is a deep whine like its low on fluid. I've heard they whine but this seems very excessive.
I just bought the truck with a blown engine so I have no reference to the normal whine these trucks come with

I flushed the system with Mercon V until it was pure red.
Then bled it with the wheels up. I turned the wheel back and forth until every bubble of air was out. Sometimes turning the steering wheel violently.
This took about 30 minutes
The first 10 minutes the engine wasn't running. The other 20 it was
This quieted down the steering ALOT
Not enough for me so I put lucas steering stop leak.....which quiets ford pumps.
This quieted down even more.
Then......I found out that my loose squeeking belt was actually a squeeking bearing and the steering pump was shot. It is. To turning smoothly so I'll get a junk yard pump as the China ones are junk.
I also just put this engine in. When installing the engine I twisted the return line. While bleeding I discovered that. It could have been part of the problem.
Now my brand new rear main seal is leaking.....so I'm taking the engine back out.
Good times with
On another note. There is a knocking sound in the steering. Like a knocking tie rod but not sure

I would have gone right to bubbles in the fluid, but you were way ahead of me. I agree with your opinion of imported parts, but the U.S. has been out of the production business for that to be fixed any time soon. I usually go to a local parts store and get the lifetime guarantee.
Good luck!

Don't bother with a junkyard pump. Buy a new one. Reason I say, is the pumps at the junkyard won't be any better than a new one. They're worn, likely exposed to the elements, and whatever mistreatment the previous owner or worker put it through.
I purchased a duralast power streering pup and filled it up with pure mercon v ATF. No additives. I would also recommend possibly replacing your power steering rack at the same time.
