I think a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil would be better and probably safer for the engine.

I've heard the old mechanic's tale of ATF in the oil to quieten down valvetrain clatter or free a sticking lifter, but never as a cleaning agent.

Best way to clean your engine out and keep it clean, do regular oil and filter changes, use quality materials and you will have no issues.

ATF does work as a cleaning agent. Most commonly you'll hear of running a bottle through with a tank of gas for cleaning injectors and the fuel system.

^^yup....it's a cleaning agent. Hell I use it for cleaning tools! I don't do it much on my newer cars, but I'd run a quart of ATF in the engine oil for a day or so before I change the oil. It cleans out gunk. Back on my old engine in the ranger, I'd use a solution of Lucas Oil fuel treatment and ATF in the gas tank. I saw some good results from it cleaning my gunked out injectors after I ran the truck dry.

Once, when I didn't have access to a lift, I tilted the transmission pan the wrong way and took an ATF shower. I don't recall feeling that clean.

When I fixed my tcase seal, I only needed 2 quarts to fill her back up. But...I went ahead and bought a gallon just for it's multiuseability. (is that a word!?)
