Cam position sensor orientation?

Hi Guys,

My 16 yr old son Max and I are close to having his 2000 3.0 engine swap completed. It runs but we think we have the cam sensor out of position. The manual says 38 degrees counter clockwise from the centerline. If we put it at approx. 4 o clock, the sensor plug hits the engine block (38 degrees up from centerline front of engine). It will fit at approx. 10 o clock (38 degrees counter clockwise from centerline of back of engine). Any pics of yours or advice is most appreciated from these two newbies!

Welcome to the forum

The Cam synchronizer is the housing and it can be positioned in any orientation, within reason, same as a distributor
The "timing" part is when the internal spinning part passes the Cam Sensor mounted on the top of the cam synchronizer, and that can be changed by lifting out the cam synchronizer and turning the shaft to move it to next gear mesh on cams drive gear

Picture here of synchronizer with cam sensor on top: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/sp0AA...3GS/s-l500.jpg

The housing is not the timing, although cam sensor will only mount to housing one way
The internal part is the timing and it can be lifted up and moved one tooth either way to allow the housing to be more adjustable

All this assumes the engine AND CAM are at 0deg TDC on compression stroke as well

Like distributor timing, the cap only fit on housing one way but the ROTOR was adjustable, so you could pull up distributor and turn the rotor to line up with #1 on the cap when it was lowered back down
Again, as long as engine/cam were at TDC compression stroke, thats the "timing" part
