Cam syncronizer or position sensor?

2006 Ranger 3.0 xlt 4x4 95,000 miles

Every couple of weeks I'll be driving along and when I go to accelerate above 3k rpm I have loss of power and sputtering. When I get vehicle off road engine idles fine then when I pull off and accelerate it will happen again. Then like nothing happened it drives fine after a few attempts.I'm thinking cam synchronizer after reading other posts online (but no chirp or squeaking noise). Cam position sensor makes more sense to me. If someone could point me in the right direction or other things to check I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

Andrew
