Catalytic converter
Catalytic converter
Hello,
does anyone know if the catalytic converter on a ford ranger with a 4.0 is different from the catalytic converter on a 2.9?
I need to buy a new catalytic converter for my truck to pass somg but I can’t find a lot of cats for my 2.9 but I can find a lot for the 4.0 and even the 3.0.
would any cat fit my 1989 ford ranger with a 2.9l v6?
thanks

In California it has to be a CARB(California Air Resources Board) approved Cat Converter, comes with a number and sticker that must be shown at the Smog station
Yes, as long as the pipe size is 2.25" IN/OUT any CARB approved Cat can be used, so 4.0l Cat would work on a 2.9l exhaust system, but might not be "bolt in" unless its specific to your year
And just a heads up, CARB compliant usually TRIPLES the price of Cat converters
If you have an independent Exhaust shop near by check their price for INSTALLED Cat converter, they can/will use universal CARB compliant Cat converter for less than you will pay for a "bolt in" CARB Compliant Cat converter uninstalled, and check around
They can cut and weld in a new Cat
