fuel pump replacement

I was quoted $700 and change to replace a fuel pump in a 2000 Ranger XL, 3.0 L, 126" wheel base. $400 for the pump. Seems a tad high! I'm seeing pumps on line $50 to $225. Am I missing something?

Welcome to the forum

Motorcraft(Ford) fuel pumps are each tested so do cost about $400, and tend to last a long time, yours is 18 years old, my 1994 is still working at 24 years old
3rd party fuel pumps are much less, but you may have to swap them out within the first year if they fail, they do come with 1 or 2 year warranties, but it doesn't cover the labor to do the swap

Really up to you, if its an easy part to swap out I almost always go with less expensive 3rd party parts, fuel pumps require a bit of labor to get to and swap out, so hard call, especially if you are paying someone else to do it

You can ask the shop to use a fuel pump you provide, and you will warranty it yourself, meaning shop is not on the hook if it fails early, so they just charge you the labor to install the pump and are done

If a shop provides a part then they are on the hook to swap it out if it fails under their warranty period for that part, no cost to you, for parts or labor
