I had the same problem exact problem years ago with a purple ranger 3.0. I would use half a tank of gas pegged at 55, slowing on the smallest hills. I had the cat replaced. I had the fuel pressure reg tested to see if it is leaking raw fuel into the engine. Then I had my injectors replaced also, then it ran like a champ.

What about the cat converter. It could be pluged or slightly pluged.

I have a 3.0 V6 Edge and all I did was use K&N's Stock air filter replacement, the Tornado, (yes it did and does work) SWITCHED FROM 5W20 TO 10W30 MOTOR OIL with Lucas oil stabilizer, 1 quart of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant. 1 Flowtech Terminator Muffler 6 inches behind cab (single inlet dual 2.5 inch outlets). result 18 MPG,s up hills and strong headwinds, 22 MPG's perfect conditions running 75 MPH with 4.10 gear ratios.
