Hidious noise NEED HELP!!!
I lifted my truck a few months back and installed a locker and some gears. Well, on Saturday I was backing my truck out of the driveway and it started making this clunking noise. It does it while moving forward as well. I discovered that when I let off the gas is when it starts to clunk. If I hit the brake it stops. WTF can it be? My mech. says it's a bad bearing. I tend not to believe everything I'm told so here I am asking you guys.
i would say jack the truck up enought to get the wheels of the ground(all 4 tires and use jack stands) and see if there is any play in the wheel. or maybe put the truck in nutral and try rotating the tires and finding where the noise is coming from.
Update: My mech. opened her up and said the ring \ pinion set is shot. I don't know how that could be since I've only had them in for a few months and I've only driven it on-road. No off-roading yet. He said that the way they are made \ forged isn't the best. They are Genuine Gear. Anyone have issues with Genuine Gear?
Whoever installed the ring and pinion failed to set them up properly, resulting in excess play and premature failure.

If this mechanic is the one who installed your gears, FIND A NEW MECHANIC.
