Making so many fun discoveries with my '88 Ranger. Was messing around this afternoon and discovered that the air filter housing had significant cracks throughout. I ordered a new one and wrapped the old in duct tape for the time being, but also noticed the following.
1. Disconnected/hoseless heater core. I'd like to reconnect the hoses, but I'm not sure where they're supposed to go. I believe there is a bypass right now, as there's no fluid in the engine bay. 2. Hose to nowhere at bottom of filter housing. Opening sits below battery. I've removed the hose to better show the opening. Should this be left open, or should this connect somewhere on the engine? The removed hose had clamps on both ends. 3. Open leads on top of filter housing. Is there a sensor that should be connected here?
Heater core inside the cab has no in or out, so hoses can go on to either nipple, in fact they should be swapped around every 2 years when you change the coolant
The larger opening on lower air filter housing tube is for pulling warmer air from around exhaust manifold in the first few minutes of a cold start, for faster warm up, its called an air pre-heater, often missing on vehicles over 10 years old
The two vacuum connections on the top of air filter housing operate the valve for the above pre-heater, also often disconnected on older vehicles
This air pre-heater working or not working will cause no running issues, if you lived in Alaska then it would help for faster warm up in winter, but in Calif.................no
