intermediate CEL on with loss of power

99 Ford Ranger XLT (Flex)
When going up a hill the Check engine light comes on and the power drops off. Any ideas s to why? There are no codes stored in the computer and once over the hill the CEL goes off and power comes back

A flashing CEL means that the PCM is detecting misfire in real time. If it goes on long enough during 2 successive drive cycles, a trouble code will be stored.

I'm willing to bet that you are having a misfire, and that a change of spark plugs and possibly wires would fix your problem.

It could be a lot of things, though. If it comes back, hopefully the code gets stored.
