Ya I too pff the snorkel and cut the hole a little bigger then glues some 3in CAI tube from the box to the wheelwell. Not too far down to suck in water but right in front of the bumper to keep the air ambient temp.

 

the father inlaw bought a put a K&N air filter kit on the mother inlaws 95 jeep wrangler. he was claiming a 15 HP increase in power, he also installed this "fitch" or something to that tune "FUEL" deallybob cleaning to give you 4 MPG better. thats all fine and well he spend 500 on these 2 mods. and i just think its a waste of money. there is NO way a bolt on air filter by itself is going to give you 15 HP. nor is that fuel dealio going to instantly give you 4 more MPG.

but on to your home made set up. it looks cool. I would never think a man of your age would make such a thing. seems like something a "YOUNGSTER" would try and concoct but to each is own. im sure you love building things so thats great. I too love to build things . IE: my truck some might think im wierd for building a dezert truck.

K&N and the 15 HP gain. I agree with you it's a bunch of crap.
I've seen desert trucks around a lot, they always seem like they barley run for some reason. I'm out in the desert a lot and have never seen one out there. Like you said to each your own. Looks cool on the street anyway.

 

Good points!!! One thing for sure, if it does blow, his warranty is HISTORY, if he thinks it's still under warranty!!! But, as you say, "NOT OUR PROBLEM"!!

Vindex man the intake looks great, If your happy with it and you feel more power then thats great! Its your truck and you can do whatever you like to it. You only live once so make the best of it.

 

Absolutely...and I'm loving it.

 

The data-logs that vindex1963 sent contain data on the sensor readings. What I look for are problems with the short and long term fuel trims, spark and other reports. If the O2's are good (and they did cycle frequently) and the MAF is clean, then the data is considered reliable. I saw less than a 4% error across the board on the LTFT's, so the O2's are reporting that the PCM is pleased with what is going on internally. The standard factory specs are +/-5% and unless we tested the car on a dyno in a sealed chamber, we can expect there to be some minor deviation in the #'s.

Can this show a HP improvement, arguably, yes. Say you do pre and post data logs with learning disabled. If you have a difference in LTFT's that show fuel is being added, it is reasonable to think that airflow has increased (all other factors being the same). You can also data log the RPM's vs. processor time and if the RPM's under load reach a predetermined point in a shorter time then there are only 2 possible explanations; the vehicle weighs less or is putting more power to the ground. I call it the "Excel Dyno". It is 100% repeatable, but the numbers mean nothing to anyone else. It is a relative measure of power.

The biggest source of your intake dilemma is the MAF itself, Ford reduced the size by almost 1/3 and used a new sensor. This is the same sensor in many other vehicles and it appears to be as much of a corporate cost cutting measure as it is a way to keep people from “Modding” the intake path. I’ll be dynoing some solutions next month.

A new air filter can EASILY gain you 15 to 20 HP over one that is clogged. Happens all the time. Now 4MPG from putting an egg beater or coffee frother in your intake? Don't think so. I have a "turbo" thingy that was tested on my Ranger in 3 different places in the intake, all neeting 0 gain. Save your money.

I agree with this statement! Going from a new OEM paper filter to a new K&N won't do a thing!!

You should be able to see if he had an increase in airflow with his home made intake by the MAF sensor datalog at a given RPM. I have given him a test to check the OEM intake to see if it was restrictive in an earlier post in this thread. The new MAF sensor accuracy is drastically affected by air flow velocity, which I have previously stated.

No ones bringing me down at all. I'm a car, motorcycle, most everything you can change and modify kind of person. I do things just to see what they will do. I'm the kid that took his toys apart to see how they worked. My Harley's are far from stock and that was from the day they came home. Same with my truck. I think this beat down wouldn't have happened if I had bought an off the shelf air intake but what fun is that. I like to build things and my intake looks far better than any store bought intake and yes the motor responded in a positive way to it. I'm an aerospace machinist and have a pretty good understanding how things work and why and the pride I feel standing back saying "I built that" because it looks professional.
