Motorcraft has always worked fine for me. A lot of guys like the K&N filters due to the ease of removel. Check out bobistheoilguy.com for a ton of info on it.

I know I've been using them for a while, mainly for the ease of removal just like you said. Learn something everyday!!!

I've been using a K&N and have had no problems. You don't save money in the short run, but you do in the long run. It's pretty expensive for the filter and recharge kit up front, but after a few cleans, you've surpassed the cost of buying the individual paper filters. If you're planning on keeping the vehicle for a while longer, it might be something to consider. Otherwise, the paper filters can do fine. I've heard (can't necessarily back it up with links) that you won't necessarily see improvements in terms of efficiency (gas mileage), but you may notice a slight performance increase. I don't know that it's any easier to add or remove the K&N filter.

That seems like a great report, tons of good info. I am very skeptical of my K&N now!!!

Fram is fine. I've been running it in my truck since I bought it off the lot.

Actually Fram is crap. ls1tech.com has plenty of people that have had a Fram oil filter fail and take the engine along with it.

Yeah I don't mean every single one will fail, I just wouldn't take the risk.

Understood.
I'm just about to hit 100k miles and I bought my truck brand new, maybe some of them are made defective. That's the only reason I would think it would fry your engine.

There was a time when yes, FRAM did make a really...really bad product(oil filter). As far as recent times, I have not come across anything negative about FRAM oil filters. Still, I use good ol' Motorcraft!

In working in the parts industry and talking to many many people about different filters it does seem to me also that fram oil filters are not very well made correct me if I am wrong but I understand that the fram filters elements are separated by a cardboard type material and after a bit they break down inside not filtering anything. My understanding also is that the K&N oil filter, along with the Wix and Mobil 1 are all a micro mesh inside in which case do not break down.

I wont use a fram oil filter and I am running a K&N air filter which I do like a lot but the fram air filters for a paper filter are pretty good for the money for sure

Stay away from the K&N's, all they pass more than the OEM paper filter is dirt and oil.

I do not get why you are on a forum that is mostly about people modifying their trucks when all you preach is OEM only everything else is junk. You make me lol.

OP, get a K&N.

Trying to keep youngsters that don't know any better from throwing their money away on useless mods.

It sounds like you fall into this category!

Obviously we don't all agree what the best air filter is for our trucks. I vote for K&N, but Takeda and I have had a good long conversation about the pros and cons.
Check out the air filter test video at:

Good video! I like that YouTube ProjectFarm guy; seems thorough+honest in his product tests.

For Models+Engines using same AirFilterBox as a V6~4.0L~SOHC, OE spec AirFilter is a
FordMotorCraft# fa1658.....8i790W*7i580L*2i280H
Considering the good Wix testing results, this Wix has Deepest+LargestSurfaceArea that fits in OE FilterBox:
Wix# wa6734..................9i055W*7i598L*2i441H

Click for more info on AirFilters for the V6~4.0L~SOHC.
