Just want to apologize in advance I'm sure this has been covered many times before I can't seem to get a straight answer. Any help I will greatly appreciate it. I recently purchased a 2000 ford ranger with no motor in it. I recently bought a 3.0 v6 top end has been redone on it. Everything went together good, but when I got to hooking up the cam sensor on the back side of the motor and it's a 3 wire, now the wiring harness that I have is meant for a 2 wire. Can I just purchase a 2 wire sensor and drop it in? Or should I look for a complete 3 wire harness. I do have a pig tail that I could use off of a harness, the reason I cannot use that entire harness is because that harness had caught on fire and is really burnt and I do not want to go though and splice all 5 million wires together. I did find a 2 wire sensor at the local auto parts store for like 60$ and the tool to align it. Now if there is a simple way to splice it with out being too confusing I don't mind doing that and it could save a few bucks. I just don't want to drop this motor in and have that sensor being an issue. Being a new truck and a newer motor I want to elminate all possible uses of it not firing or running correctly. Again sorry if this has been covered and I do appreciate any input. Thank you!!

 

The engine you have must be 1994....95 on was three wire.....not sure what you mean when you say this ...now the wiring harness that I have is meant for a 2 wire ...??

Yes, Ford switched cam position sensor from a 3 wire Hall effect sensor to a 2 wire variable reluctance sensor in the late 1990's.

Since these are totally different sensor types there is no "wiring" conversion possible.
Your 2000 computer can't "understand" a 3 wire Hall Effect Sensor, it can only "understand" a 2 wire VR sensor.

So get the new cam position synchro and sensor
