i was driving downt the interstate today going about 65 and then it seemed like my engine shut off real fast and then came back on and jolted the truck. I think i saw the rpm's drop but it happend so fast i couldnt tell. i have a 98 3.0 4x4 with around 155000 miles on it. has anybody else heard of this happening?

 

where you doing 80-90 ??? Mightve been the speed limiter

 

nope i was doing between 65 and 70 i dont even think i can over 85 any more and i cant afford a speeding ticket so.

 

when i got out of class and went to my truck i lost power sometime because my cd player spit out my cd and my clock was wrong. when i got home i relized that i forgot to fully tighten one of my battery terminals could i have possibly lost voltage when i was driving earlier causing the engine to stall for a split second?

 

yaa only if you have a bad alternator and one of your terminals came off then yaa your truck would shut but idk if it would come back on tho...

 

If it happens again watch the tach. If the rpms fall down kinda slowly and then rise back up, it would indicate a fuel type issue. If the rpms immediately drop down to zero, and then fly back up to normally would indicate a spark issue like the ignition coil cut out for a moment.

 

well it wasnt slow at all it was all of a sudden and i didnt really have time to react just to glance down real quick and i think i saw the tach drop. i replaced the spark plugs and wires at the begining of the summer. it did something like this about a week and a half ago coming back to st. louis when i would have to take it off cruise for a hill or for slow traffic and then hit the gas.

 

I have dealt with a couple of funky ignition coils on Fords where they test out good and have no issues the majority of the time, but every now and then they would 'miss' and cause an instant loss of power and the tach drops to zero, and sooner than you can react everything would be back to normal. Ended up having to ensure it was no other problems and replaced the coils which did the trick. Might not be it for you but its something to check out. You can test an ignition coil with an ohm meter.

 

rob, his truck has a coil pack so multiple resistance tests will be required. also, his truck can not be diagnosed between fuel and spark by how mast the rpm drops. rpm on his truck is picked up by the crank sensor, so if the rpm fell right to 0 and jumped back up that may indicate a fault in the crank sensor or wiring

 

but if the sensor was bad would it cause the truck to jolt? Thanks for the help

 

I had an old dodge neon that would do that to me. it turned out the Positive battery cable was coming apart about 1" up inside the insulation. this was also with a new battery, alternator and starter on the car.

check all the connections and maybe give the cables a good wiggle and see if you can duplicate the issue still.

 

I would agree check the coil...

 

I have 2006 with 3.0 and it had loss of power today on interstate at 70 mph. The truck just turned 65,000 miles. This was wierd I have had no vehicle do this before. Pulled off the interstate checked oil and belts all ok. When start to accelerate onto interstate felt like the accelerator pedal was engaging without me touching it. When got home all was working fine. Has anyone else had this happen to the 06 year model 3.0L.
