1997 XLT 4.0 5 SPEED ISSUES

Firstly: odometer just quit working- both trip and cumulative: it’s a replacement cluster as I wanted a tach: had been working fine: nothing done to trans or anything else: any thoughts/suggestions welcome!!
(Yes; aware I could change it out, yet again!!)
Second: brakes, pretty sure just rear, are hanging up intermittently: have tried many different iterations of getting them to act up, but nothing consistent seems to make them do so: they’re not totally locking up; just dragging enough to hold the truck in place on a slight slope: sometimes not on at all as I start driving, then will be dragging when I stop and let off brakes; other times I can feel them dragging before I ever hit the brakes: one thing-ABS has been on since I got this thing running in January: total brake re-do; literally everything including lines/master & brake cylinders.
Again: thoughts/suggestions??!
Thanks!!

Common issue on Fords, odometer worm drive gear
Google: Ford Ranger odometer worm drive

Assuming speedometer still works

You could have air in the rear brake line, or need new rear brakes and slaves, gravity bleed each rear wheel, for a few minutes, top up master
ABS light is also troubling, if its valve is sticking then you may need to rebuild it
But could just need new rear axle ABS sensor, not common issue but known issue, easy to change, but would NOT cause sticking/dragging rear brakes

Hey Ron
In 1997 the speed sensor is digital reluctor style in the diff is it not?
I had no speedometer driving around the property after finishing the disc brakes as the weather seal in the plug had dislodged and I didn't have the plug fully engaged.
I only drove less than 100 feet so I don't know if trip or other things were not working.

With the rear locking up I had this exact issue with my Hyundai car, and it happened to be the shoes and drums. Not sure why but I replaced those and never had an issue again. Sometimes they would just full lock up as soon as I touched the pedal, and sometimes they were fine. Was very random.

No, only 1998-2000 Rangers used the ABS sensor on the differential for speed

1997 has the speed sensor on transmission tail shaft(or transfer case if a 4x4)
