Need to replace motor. What year(s) will interchange with this motor? Is there other years that would work with alterations?

Welcome to the forum

2WD or 4x4 won't matter, may have to swap oil pans

Best and only years are 1998-2000 if you need to pass emissions

If no emissions testing then 1990-1997 can be used with some "by the ways"

You need to use your 2000 upper and lower intake, and Cam sensor with tower(synchronizer), so wiring matches, 1999/2000 were different

1990-1996 used 6 bolt crank
1997-2000 used 8 bolt
So if you use a 1996 or older 4.0l OHV you will need a new 6 hole flex plate(auto) or flywheel(manual)

You can look at the changes, over the 10 years of the 4.0l OHV, that were made here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...0rebuild.shtml

The crank change in 1996/97 was the only real change that effects long block swaps, and the 98/99 change to 2 wire cam sensor

No, the 4.0l OHV was only made/used from 1990-2000

Rangers got the 4.0l SOHC in 2001, different engine, different computer and different wiring, if you even consider this swap then you don't do it, you do a V8 swap instead
