2004 Edge 4.0 Engine Violently Shaking
2004 Edge 4.0 Engine Violently Shaking
Timeline....Last year the truck sat behind the mechanics shop waiting for a new fuel pump. The job was done, and added about 1/4 tank of fuel and truck ran perfectly fine for about 2 days. Ran it in the morning, then out of nowhere going uphill it felt like I was riding the rumble strip. The shaking continued til I got home....shakes in gear and while at idle now.
The shaking goes away at about 2000 rpm. Also heard a slight ticking sound coming from passenger side. The mileage is about 195,000. Not sure if "anyone" has replaced the plugs since new. I've added dry-gas to the tank but to no avail.
Any ideas??

Welcome to the forum
Anytime there is rough running on any engine, especially the Ranger 4.0ls, Clean the MAF sensor, very easy to do
Any time a new fuel pump is installed a new fuel filter should also be installed, was that on your bill?
If not change the filter, not your problem but should be done
Yes, spark plugs can be changed as general service, especially if they are 16 years old, same for spark plug wires, 16 years is about the limit for those as well
Use Double platinum never single platinum or iridium spark plugs, you have a Waste Spark system
If you can get Motorcraft brand they will last longer, second is Autolite, third is any other brand
On the rad support there should be an emissions sticker that lists spark plug gap, use the lower number
i.e. 0.060 to 0.064, use 0.060
Ford decided to widen the gap from 0.054 in the early 2000's on the 4.0ls, not sure why, but spark timing is set for that gap so use it
You use the lower number because as the miles add up the spark plug tips wear down and gap widens

sounds like a cylender or two on the same side arent firing.
giving gas seems to force through the gas so maybe its a clogged injector?
hook it up to diagnostic or if you are in the mainternance interval range just swap the fuel filter and take it to a shop to get a good solvent through the injectors in case gas has evaporated leaving a resin gunk partially covering injector nozzles.
