4.0 OHV 2000 RING GAP Riddle
Riddle me this...got the engine torn down for inspection. Old top compression ring had a gap of .035". All the bores were pretty dang good measured out to be in tolerance. The Enginetech rering kit from RockAuto was ordered STD and the top compression ring gap was .028". My Haynes manual and FORD service manual spec the top compression ring gap to be .015" to .023". The old ring isn't worn being the same width as the new ring (ID to OD). New ring at .028" gap is way out of spec too big. The old ring is really out of spec at .035" gap. Ordered more rings Hastings .010" over arrived today having almost no gap. These rings can be filed to fit spec.
What is going on here....both Ford & Haynes manuals are wrong? There is no way the original rings wore down .020" from new in only 101k wife driven miles and the cylinder bores all look good even better now being honed/glaze broken. There is a formula bore multiplied by .0045 equals about .018" for ring gap. There's gotta be something to explain all this.
