4.0 OHV Timing Chain Bad?? Need Help.
4.0 OHV Timing Chain Bad?? Need Help.
I recently got a p1309 and a few lean codes. I ordered a new cam position syncro and sensor and installed them wrong. I didnt put the engine at TDC and turned it on and drove it around, it lacked power and had no acceleration. I then took it home and thought the problem was something else. I replaced the
MAF,IAC,TPS,Spark Plugs,Plug wires,Coil Pack, Air Temp,Vaccum lines, Intake manifold, Harness for Cam Sensor and ran it directly to the PCM.
After doing research i learned that i wasnt suposed to install it at 10 degress after or before TDC but right at TDC. So I bought a brand new syncro and sensor and installed them 100% by the book. I double checked all the electrical, wiring, vaccum, ect and my truck starts but ideals rough, random mis fires, no throttle power, dies after a few minutes or if i give it full throttle. Could the timing chain have had skipped a tooth or two? Or maybe has a lot of slack since i incorrectly installed the sensor? The only code its giving me now is p1340. Thats why i installed a new connector and ran it to the pcm connector to be double sure the connections are good and solid. Ive been battleing this truck for 3 weeks now. Its come to the point where ive considered buying a new engine and or selling the truck I dont know what to do and have no hope. Every time I think I find the problem I dont. Thank you! Also if it is the timing chain any ways to check before I tear the thing apart. Thanks!

Do a compression test
4.0l OHV should have 155-165psi in each cylinder
You would be down under 130psi if timing chain was an issue.
For P1309 you have to have computer test the misfire sequence after Cam sensor is reset
p1340 means a wire is disconnected between Cam sensor and computer

For P1309 you have to have computer test the misfire sequence after Cam sensor is reset
Once the synchronizer and Cam sensor are installed, the misfire profile will need to be relearned. To do this, verify that the fuel level is between 1/4 and 3/4 tank, then drive the vehicle, and do 3 or 4 decelerations from 65 MPH down to 40 MPH without touching the brake pedal.
Thank you! I will double check compression. Problem is truck wont even run after being started. Mis firing and the second you touch the gas it dies. You can hear it sucking in alot of air from the intake. Very loud. ill also double check all the wiring. I figured maybe wiring was bad so I used a volt meter and found the ground, positive, and signal wires and ran a new cam position connector with pigtails straight to the PCM harness connector. I ran it to the wires with the same color and the wire that had signal. ( touched negative on harness and positive on Cam Sensor harness ) But I will double check that its correct. Also do you know where I can find a 1998 4x4 ranger PCM pin diagram? I want to double make sure the wires are correct. Thank you!
Your engine issues are not a Cam sensor problem
From the noise you describe there is a massive vacuum leak
Pages 1 and 4 below have the PCM pins for 1998 4.0l
Connector Pin numbering is available by Googling: Ford EEC-V pin images

Spend $20-$25 on vacuum gauge
Any gasoline engine should have 18"-21" vacuum at idle
Check coil pack firing order
3 4
2 6
1 5
Front
5 6 4 side is often miswired at coil or at spark plugs

Thank you! Ill double check! also.. when im reading reading the pin layout Ron, am i looking at the ecu pins or the wiring harness. Thanks!

I have tried helping you on multiple forums, multiple threads.
Each time I suggest something you never respond.
Many of the suggestions I have made are easy test to perform and would help us help you.
I am sorry you are having problems with your truck but you are making the situation worse by posting on multiple Forums and multiple threads.
We can help, but please stop creating different threads. stick to one thread and perform the simple test we ask you to do.
If you cannot or will not do these test and report back honestly with what you find stop wasting our time.

sorry for for not replying I got caught up and busy and just start a new thread because I get too deep into a rabbit hole and like to start fresh and new. I've done as much as I can and I always post results and things that I have tried. Later this week when I have work off I'll post results from what ron has reccomended. I have a feeling it's either wiring but you never know. I know for a fact the sensor is installed 100% correctly
I'm back sorry for delay
Hey guys I'm back!! Sorry been a few weeks. Been super busy with work I also work long 12 hour night shifts then on days off I'm busy with girlfriend running errands ect. So good news and bad news! Good news is I fixed the cam position sensor. Installed a new wiring connector and pig tail. It's spliced directly into the pcm connector. Then you so much for the wiring diagrams ron!! They were a massive help in understanding the wiring harness and how it's controlled and how one wire send power to multiple circuits. I wired it up and fired her up. She's healthy sounds good. Only problem is in park and neatural normal rpms if I floor it has power and is awesome! On the road I drove her and she's good half throttle coming to a stop idels good! Only issue ( bad news ) under 30 mph she has no power when full throttle. I don't have any codes. And the p1340 code has gone away. I've noticed the smell of gas under the bed. After driving it and letting it run. And I've also noticed gas has leaked out and went onto the sides of the tank and the rear end. But just a little nkt a lot. And gas tank is a quarter full. I'll check the fuel pressure this weekend and get back to results. But I'm postive it's not a timing issue. It can either be bad ecm / pcm. Or either something with the pump. Gasket. Seal. And air in the system. Or even could this be related to a fuel regulator? Like a pressure gauge for exhaust thag goes back into the fuel system? Thanks!
Computers get blamed and replaced often yet normally are reliable.
They will fail but i doubt this is the case with your truck.
You need to keep to the basics, fix the obvious.
Then move on to more technical pin point test if needed.
If you have a fuel leak, repair it before any further diagnosis is made.
Then perform a fuel pressure test with a known good and calibrated fuel pressure test gauge.
Well trained and seasoned technicians have issues getting the Camshaft syncronizer installed properly.
If the sycronizer is off by one tooth it can cause your problem.
So please do not dismiss the possibility, creating a unneeded mystery in the process.
