4.0 single overhead valve engine removal

Engine will not rotate to take the flex plates off. What could be causing the engine to not rotate?

Welcome to the forum

4.0l OHV (Over head valve)
or
4.0l SOHC (single over head CAM)

Spark plugs need to be removed
Trans in Neutral

If 4.0l SOHC then timing chain problem could be locking engine from turning
Need to pull trans out with engine if that's the case, or pull off valve covers and check the front and rear chains

Why are you pulling out the engine?

motor was overheated and has blown head gasket or cracked head or block. Didn’t want to hear pull the trans. Motor was running before I started the disassemble. It’s a 4x4 lots of stuff to take off. Motor turns back and forth 20 degrees or so before it stops.

And all spark plugs are out?
Starter motor is out?

What year Ranger, that will tell us what engine it is

Won't be a cracked block.

If 4.0l OHV, 1990-2000 Rangers will be cracked head, maybe both.

If 4.0l SOHC then probably not cracked head but crushed head gasket

You can pull just the engine with torque converter attached, it will come off/out of the trans, just be careful
Pull out radiator for clearance up front

Thats weird because I just put a wrench on the crank and it rotated all the way around to get each of the 4 nuts off the torque converter to flex plate? I didnt have to remove sparkplugs or anything.

Reads like you have no compression in the engine if crank was not hard to turn in certain places
