4.0 SOHC engine swap matrix

I need to replace the 4.0 SOHC engine on my 2001 Ford Ranger. What I would like to know is what year Rangers/Explorer engines would fit.

The ranger is a 4X4

Thanks

What a coincedence------just doing that to mine now. Picked up an '03 with 37k and having it installed now into my '01 4X4. Watch the VIN letter!

By VIN Letter are you refering to the "E" in the VIN?

I have a '01 Ranger 4.0L SOHC with a bad engine. I would like to put in a '03 4.0L SOHC in the Truck. Will an engine from an Explorer Fit? Is there any problems putting a '03 engine in a '01 Truck? I want to put an '03 in because that is when Ford upgraded the Cam Chain Tensioner.

Let me know

Thanks

All 01-07 engines will fit(4.0), all the Explorer engines in your year range will work but if you are looking at an 06+ they use a fly by wire pedal system in which the accelerator runs on a servo kind of deal and has a crap load of woring and electronics. I dont even want to reall ylook under the hood of mine and see all of it. Good Luck.

Yeah, these guys can let you know more than me, but that's what my mechanic told me. It's gotta be a SOHC engine for sure though. btw, been driving it for a couple of days and it runs great! No rattling and runs real strong. Mine did come from another Ranger-----bought it for $1000 with 60 days guarantee.

I found a '03 Ranger 4.0 SOHC with 17K miles on it for $750

I installed the engine with the wiring harness that came with the engine. I also purchased the ECU that went with the engine so I would not get any EGR errors comming from the '01 ECU.

My first problem was the engine would not start. I forgot the key code was in the ECU. I put the old '01 ECU back in to get the truck going. The Truck runs great, but I have two problems.
1. The Speedometer does not work
2. I get a OD light blinking. Was ther a change in the wiring harness from '01 to '03? Will the problem go away with the '03 ECU?

I just wanted to say thanks for your response. The '03 engine works great in my '01. The engine feels stronger than the orginal. The acceleration is better, the low end torque feels stronger. It may be just my imagination, but it feels stronger.
I see on the engine Ford made a lot of improvements to the wiring harness, Better connectors especially the fuel injector connectors. Intake manifold gaskets are better.

There is sooo much more room under the hood without the EGR setup. I am glad I went with the '03 as a replacement.

The Transmission problem turned out to be a rock was not allowing me to plug in the speedometer sensor cable completely. Once I found the problem Everything was fine.

Thanks again

I swapped a 4.0L SOHC out of a 2009 into my '01. All you need to do is swap intakes, injectors and fuel rails. Long block is the same. I picked mine up with 50K miles for like $900 and did the swap myself.

thanks so much for this post. My timing chain went in my 02 with 240,000 KMS (150,000 miles), so im buying an 08 motor with 120,000 KMS. (75,000 miles). Not doing the work since itll take my mechanic a day/8-10 hours to do it, so ill save time rather than me taking 24 hours to do it.

Hoping you'll be able to answer this for me.. but I was having timing chain issues with my 2004 4.0 liter with 170k on it so I decided it was time to swap for something with a little less wear and picked up a 2011 4.0 from a wrecked ranger. I read your post a few weeks ago and was prepared to swap intake/rails/injectors.. however, with the new motor in hand I see it has a different pcm connector.

Can I just swap the old wire harness from the core motor as well or do I need to get a computer from a 2011?

Thanks in advance

How important is the ballance shaft found in 4x4 models? If a 2x4 engine is installed in a 4x4 will it only cause added vibration in 4 low? Or harmonics?

from a 200? Explorer ?

As long as it’s a 4.0 sohc ford engine it will work. I put a 09 4.0 sohc into my 03 ranger. I had to change fuel injectors and my thermostat housing. Everything else was the same. I’d recommend getting a newer 06+ engine due to timing chains being better in the later models ( guides are better supposedly

I currently have a wrecked 99 explorer with a 4.0 SOHC and I was woundering if I could put it in a 99ish Ranger. If i could I was also woundering how much work it would be (i.e. would i be able to use the Ranger EMC or the explorers) or if it is even worth it? Thank you for the help and advice.

2wd engine works fine in the 4wds. The shaft doesn’t madder really in terms of 4wd. My truck is 4x4 and I put in a engine out of a 2wd

Sorry to jump on another post here.I have a 2004 ranger 4.0 SOHC. What will it fit in and does auto or manual matter.I'm from old school V8 era when cranks in automatics and manuals made a difference. That's why I'm asking.

No, wouldn't matter on a 4.0l SOHC swap, flexplate or flywheel just needs to be swapped over
