4.0L SOHC swap into a 1999 ranger that had a 4.0L OHV
I’m currently deciding if I should rebuild my 1999 ford ranger motor (4.0 OHV), or swap my already rebuilt (4.0 SOHC) from my old 2003 ranger that I unfortunately totaled. Do any of you know if the newer 4.0L SOHC is even compatible with my 1999 ranger.
Thankyou 4.0 SOHC
You would also need the 4.0l SOHC Computer and engine wiring harness, 2001-2003
AND
2001-2003 transmission matching 2001-2003 computer, i.e. manual or auto
In 2001 Ford added OSS sensor to both manuals and automatics, so 2001 and up computer needs to see that sensor
Automatics also got ISS sensor in 2001
You might be able to use 1998-2000 Explorer 4.0l SOHC computer and harness, has same fuel pressure, 60psi, and you could use your current transmission, manual or automatic, but never researched that
I
Ok Thank you for all the info, I think it’s probably best that I rebuild the OHV, and sell my rebuilt 4.0 SOHC. Do you know how much my newer engines worth?, it has 217k and it was never blown up I just rebuilt it for power. Thanks again
Its worth what ever you can get for it in your area, can be expensive to ship an engine
Like anything else, the buyer decides the value when the seller accepts payment
Ask what you think is a fair price, if you don't get any calls lower price a bit
If a shop did the rebuild, and warranties it, it might be worth a bit more, buyer would be rolling the dice on a private party rebuild unless YOU will warranty it, which I wouldn't recommend
You could probably get more for it by buying a 2001+ Ranger with a bad 4.0l SOHC engine, then do the swap and resell it
2001-2003 Ranger 4.0l SOHC did have issues with timing chains so very likely to find a "mechanics special" for sale
1997-2003 Explorers with 4.0l SOHC also had same issue
