well a new super charger is about $2000 but a used 5.0 is about 2000 to $5000, which if if you think about it a 5.0 has more more options than a 4.0,but it depends on how much you now about cars is how much a 5.0 is gonna cost but, it's all up too you how much power you want of course it depends on on how much you wannna spend and how much power you want

Here's something I posted a couple of days ago.

PATS:
The Type E PATS in the 2001+ Ranger is a different system and is not compatible with the 99~01 Explorer PCM. One solution is to add and wire the Explorer's Type B PATS Module, PATS Transceiver and keys. Another possibility is to turn off PATS in the Explorer PCM via a custom calibration.

Speedometer:
In the 2001~2003 Ranger, the speedometer is driven by the PCM based on a signal from the OSS sensor at the transmission output shaft. In the Explorer, it is driven by the 4WABS Module based on the signal from the VSS in the rear diff. After the swap, The Ranger PCM and OSS will be gone and a module is needed to send a speedometer signal based on the VSS - the Ranger 4WABS Module cannot do it. Some have swapped in the ABS controls from the Ex. I used a GEM from another Ranger to do it. It should also be possible via an aftermarket speed correction module.

Power steering high pressure hose:
The top portion of the 5.0 Ex PS hose near the pump is a different shape, so the Ranger hose will not fit. On the other end, the fitting on the Explorer hose assembly won't fit the 01~03 Ranger steering rack. I cut the two in the steel tubing portion near the rack and married them together with a compression union to make a custom hose assembly that connects the Ex PS pump to the Ranger steering rack.

Doing a 4x4 complicates things but that is true of any year Ranger V8. Even more so for a manual transmission 4x4 Ranger V8.

Yes and then you'll have to adapt it to the Ranger case or install a full size case.

It's easier to do a supercharger if it is a pre-engineered kit. Even if you piece it together yourself, it still might be easier on a 4x4. LOL

If you just want some extra power I would go with the S/C

If you plan on building this thing into a power monster I would go 5.0.

Build the 5.0 and then supercharge that! haha, but seriously, if you are looking for a somewhat simple increase in horsepower...supercharge it. If you are looking for a more beefy drive-train with more horsepower, go with the 5.0. and even though i joked about it before, you could always build the 5.0 and if it doesn't roar like you want it to, you can supercharge it.

since you have the SOHC I'd say supercharger. If you had the OHV motor I'd say do a 5.0 swap since you'd only get like 0.00000001 more HP from doing anything to a OHV and its dumb to put forced induction on a motor that can't do a damn thing above 3000rpm to begin with
