94 ranger 4.0 OHV 5 speed manual 4x4. 119.5k

My name is dakota. I'm a brand new member to the forum, and have a quick question.

vehicle is a 94 ranger 4.0 OHV 5 speed manual 4x4. 119,500 miles. I am attaching a photo for reference.

I've got a somewhat new leak I have discovered recently. Has anyone else experienced the tranny fluid leak in this location? Mine is fairly minor. Did you take care of it or just monitor it? I believe this is a non gasket spot, and it just takes a bead of rtv silicone as a sealant. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Welcome to the forum

Can't see a picture but you have an M5OD-R1 transmission

M5OD-R1 had only one common leak point, well 3 but in the same area, lol.
On the rear of the top cover are 3 rubber plugs, these would get hard over time and then leak, fluid level is lower than the plugs but splashed fluid would leak out

Can be seen here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/drivet...ission-123480/

The M5OD-R1 uses ATF, yes, automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission
Ford Mercon or similar

Thank you. This is what I've been wondering for a while now. Sorry you couldn't see the photo. The link you pasted is exactly what I'm talking about. The leak ends at the bottom but starts up there. I just did a clutch kit and shifter repair kit. I thought the shifter repair kit would stop the leak because it was so worn out, and all the pieces were broken apart, but it did not solve if.

can I reach up over the end of the tranny and replace those plugs?

I have never tried to replace them that way so can not say.

You may be able to remove transmission bracket and lower it down enough to get at them, but never tried that either

I will take out the new shift repair kit, that I installed, and pull back the carpet from the inside to access these plugs. I found a couple YouTube videos showing that they are easily accessible from up top. Fortunately.
